comfortable and inviting environment.

Lively worship and relevant preaching.

Our music is dynamic and expressive. You also might see some people raising their hands as a biblical expression of worshipping God. Followed by worship, we dive into the Word of God and provide practical ways to live empowered and victorious lives.

Our beliefs shape how we live and serve.

We boldly share the gospel in order to lead others to a radical life-changing experience and believe that every individual has a God-given purpose and destiny. Sacrificial living, perseverance, humility, resiliency, and an undivided heart to the ways of God are some identifying values that are important to us.

John Alarid

Lead Pastor

Pastor John comes from a background of affiliation with Chicano gangs and a Mexican cartel. He spent well over a decade as a drug dealer and hopeless heroin addict. After hitting rock bottom several times, he finally surrendered his life to Christ on a cement floor in a lonely prison cell at the New Mexico Department of Corrections. After the Lord encountered Pastor John in prison, he was voted in as inmate pastor.

John went through the Christ-centered Victory Outreach recovery home in Phoenix, AZ and the Urban Training Center in downtown Los Angeles, California. God not only gave John eternal life but also set him free from addiction and restored his mind. This man, who was once incoherent, graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology and Church Leadership from Central Bible College, Summa Cum Laude. He graduated with an MA in Urban and Intercultural Studies from Evangel University Seminary.  He has served as Berean faculty at Global University, lead pastor, recovery home director, missionary/ church planter in Manila the Philippines, and prison evangelist. He is an endorsed correctional chaplain and Prison Fellowship Area Manager who continues to go back into prisons and jails with a message of Hope.

John and Hannah Alarid met at Central Bible College in 2011. They were married on December 25, 2013. John is from Albuquerque, New Mexico and Hannah was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Hannah graduated the Long Island Teen Challenge program in 2007 and served as staff at the women’s facility. After working in the Behavior Health field for several years, Hannah decided to go back to Evangel University to complete her Bachelors in Worship Leadership. Since moving to Springfield in 2011, God gave them a passion to reach North Springfield with the love of Jesus.

Faith had the privilege of growing up in a Christian home in Japan until age 19. When she came to the states she met Chuck, her husband, at Portland Bible College. God has given them 6 wonderful children, as well as four amazing spouses and almost eight grandchildren. But even more awesome is the immediate family of God—CityReach Springfield—where they can help reach the lost and hurting. Susan-and-David-Smith
David & Susan Smith

Pastor of Community Care & Women’s Ministries Pastor

David gave his life to Christ during his childhood years in Redwood City, California. His salvation experience became a more consistent and meaningful life-change when he was in high school. He discovered his calling when he was doing theatrical roles in high school, college, university and graduate school as a theatre artist. The road was not always smooth, as many brothers and sisters in Christ could not understand his passion for acting. After receiving his degrees at Oral Roberts University, San Jose State University and extensive scholarly pursuits at the University of Missouri at Columbia, he became an Evangel University professor for thirty-three years in theatre until he retired in 2013 as Professor Emeritus.

Faith and learning have been coupled with his professional life as well as extensive traveling ministry in drama. David has performed his one-man characters for CityReach, conventions, chaplaincy services for the U. S. Army and many churches world-wide. He and his wife have developed dramatic vignettes with John the Revelator, Dialogue With the Apostle, The Apostle Paul, The Life of King David, El Shaddai (Abraham and Susan as Mary), The Christmas Shepherd and John the Baptist.

David is working with The City Reach Church as a Pastor of Community Care. Their son Andrew sings with the praise and worship group at CityReach.

Susan Smith was raised in a Christian home and committed her life to the Lord as a young child. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Oral Roberts University, where she sang with the World Action Singers on Oral’s nationally syndicated television programs. This is also where she was filled with the Holy Spirit. After graduation she and her husband traveled with Living Sound, International, a traveling musical missionary-evangelism ministry. Upon leaving Living Sound they served as Youth and Music ministers in Hayward, CA. They moved to Springfield, where Susan earned a Master’s degree in Education with music emphasis at MSU.

She has taught voice and related music classes at both CBC and Evangel since 1980 and is semi-retired from Evangel, where she continues to teach. The Smiths came to CityReach as a result of Hannah Alarid, Pastor John’s wife, who became Susan’s voice student. They visited the church the Sunday after it launched and caught the vision. She currently serves as the Women’s Ministries Pastor at CityReach.

Gary & Laura Larimore

Deacons & Hospitality Team Leaders

As a young man I never knew God and had only heard about God very little. I didn’t understand who he was or if he even existed. After fighting one addiction or another and being enslaved to Meth and the grip of Satan on my life for 30 plus years, I found myself serving a 14-year federal prison sentence. In the middle of this sentence, I had a very real encounter with God. I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior; I was completely born again. My life has never been the same.

Upon my release from prison God led me to CityReach Springfield where I have found my home. Through Pastor John Alarid’s prayers, leadership, and confirmation from God, I truly feel I’ve been called to ministry. I am now enrolled in Berean Ministry classes. I am so grateful for the redemption in my life and I will continue to seek God’s will for my life. I pray that God will continue to use me for greater things and to glorify Him. I am very excited to see what God has planned for our lives; I do know the best is yet to come. My wife Laura and I both serve as deacons and oversee the hospitality team at CityReach Springfield. I also assist with our men’s ministry group and spend time mentoring the men in the Hope Home.

I was raised in a Christian home and from a very young age I was saved and have had a personal relationship with God. Even though I have always had a relationship with God, life hasn’t always been easy or even fair. I found myself going through many years in some dark times, including two rough marriages. I didn’t always understand why but I kept my faith in God; I never turned my back on him and he never turned his back on me. God was the one who walked every step of those dark days with me. Now looking back I see the many blessings that came from those times, two beautiful children that both know God personally and walk with him today. Living through those times of darkness has strengthened my faith and walk with God. He has shown me nothing is impossible with him first in your life.

I am so grateful for all that God has done for me. He has delivered me completely out of the darkest times, blessed my family and me over-abundantly, and answered my prayers for a God fearing husband. I now serve alongside my husband Gary as deacons and as hospitality leaders. I also host our ladies ministry group at CityReach Springfield. I am very excited to see what God has in store for our future in ministry and seeing the vision of the Church—it will be amazing.
